Graphic Design 2 – This is a survey course that will focus on the use of electronic media (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop), traditional art techniques, concepts of New Media, elements and principles of art / design, industry standards with an emphasis on applying the general rules of creating a coherent / readable message. Students will be working in a computer lab based classroom as well as in a hands-on studio art classroom. The assignments will allow students to engage in project based and, small group learning. Students in Graphic Design 2 will be expected to show competency using Adobe Illustrator / Adobe Photoshop.

My goal is provide students challenging assignments with an intermediate skill level. This course is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for the visual arts. A full year of the Graphic Design 2 course will satisfy your 10 credits toward your elective units, or technology units, or Visual and Performing Art (VAPA) units. 5 credits for Fall / 5 credits for Spring.

Students that are enrolled in Graphic Design 2 are required to show effort to engage in applying the skills, techniques and knowledge provided in this course. Students will have many opportunities to demonstrate understanding via their art projects, learning activities, classroom critiques, writing assignments and one-on-one discussions with the teacher. Each student will develop and hone their skills on real world tasks / projects common to the graphic design industry. Each student will be mentored in developing a portfolio of work that could be presented as proof of competency in a job interview.

Graphic Design 2 students will be expected to self-assess, develop ideas beyond their first solution and work in a “series” (3 or more pieces dealing with the same idea) for each project.

There are no fees for this course. Natomas Unified School District will supply all necessary materials for students to earn a grade. Students must be respectful of our classroom equipment and supplies. If there is excessive damage to our equipment or supplies, the privilege of using them may be taken away or a bill to replace broken materials will be submitted to the person who is responsible. Grades will not be entered until the fees are paid.

Grades – Student performance is evaluated based on effort, following directions, completing projects on time, originality, creativity, craftsmanship, attendance and attitude. Final grades will reflect growth or lack of growth in these areas.
